I'm working with [a client] whose parents are fundamentalist Christians. This young woman talks of suicide because she is constantly being told that God condemns homosexuality. You bet I do.
She made the poignant comment, "I pray to God every day to make me straight. If He's against people being gay, why doesn't He help me?"
I'm looking for easy-to-read information to give her, just so she'll understand that not all Christians believe as her parents do. She needs to know that God loves her, in spite of what her parents say. Do you have any suggestions for reading material?
- Start with Mel White's "What the Bible Says and Doesn't Say About Homosexuality" -- a brilliantly accessible resource debunking the use of Holy Scripture as a blunt instrument to beat up gay and lesbian people.
- Rent "For the Bible Tells Me So" -- the feature film exploring the stories of a number of families over-coming homophobia and embracing their LGBT children.
- Listen to "Claiming the Blessing 2.0" -- the sermon I preached last summer about the journey toward inclusion in both The Episcopal Church and All Saints Church.
- And then finish up with some more Mel White ... his book "Stranger at the Gate: To Be Gay & Christian in America"
