These were the two top stories when I just logged onto the Los Angeles Times home page before closing up shop to head home for the evening.
One story began:
The gunman opened fire inside the crowded salon Wednesday, littering the shop with bodies. Eyewitnesses said that he was targeting his ex-wife and that the two were involved in a custody dispute.The other:
It's no longer illegal to abuse a spouse if you're in Topeka, Kan. -- at least under city law.The Topeka City Council voted Tuesday night to repeal the city’s misdemeanor domestic battery law.Honest to God, people. What is happening to this country?
The Topeka situation is not about abusing women, it is about politics! The city wants the county to take the abuse cases and the county would not do so. The idea in repealing the law, is that the only available laws are the State and County laws so the city ducks the costs of trials. No one is actually permitted to beat up his wife. It is a sad comment that the problem runs deep enough that the cost makes the repeal worth it!
