Religious liberty is the freedom to worship whatever God you please, and to worship, vote and otherwise act as your conscience leads you within the law.
ReplyDeleteThe electorate and their representatives are expected to vote on the basis of what they think is right and wrong - again, within the law and the basic guarantees of the Constitution. And what forms our understanding of what is right and wrong more than our religious beliefs? That's certainly what the Founders of this country expected, regardless of any disagreements they may have had on what those religious beliefs should be.
Tell that to the puritans Susan. They would probably burn you at the stake!!

ReplyDeleteThe Puritans didn't come to America to establish religious freedom. They came here to establish a State that had their religion as the established one. And for a while they succeeded.
ReplyDeleteIIRC, you'd have gotten exile for your first offense, exile while being whipped through the various towns between where you were convicted (of heresy or something such) to where you crossed the border, and you'd have gotten executed for your 3rd offense.
