"Happy Anniversary to Us" ... to The Episcopal Church ... to the brave women who stepped out in faith 36 years ago today and became our first women priests (AND to the courageous bishops who stepped out with them!)More on this later today if I can grab some time in the busy day of doing the work the trailblazing Philadelphia 11 paved the way for me to do 36 years ago today!
I wasn't even a thought on this day...my mother found out she was pregnant with me one month later though if that counts. In some form or another, I was still part of the universal energy on this historic day.
ReplyDeleteI was in college ... it was the summer between sophomore and junior year ... and if I thought anything at all about it (not paying much-AKA-any attention to "things church" at that point in my life) I probably thought "why would anybody want to do that?????"

ReplyDeleteI remember to this day teaching at a Vacation Bible School at St. Luke's Cathedral in Portland when a member of the parish burst through doors with this amazing story of having just attended this "ordination" of women... It seemed like such an incredible idea at the time. However I had the good fortune a couple of years later to the "youth" delegate to GC on MPLS and was in the room for the approval of women's ordination.
ReplyDeleteI was between junior and senior years of college, working at a summer camp in north Georgia. I didn't hear about the ordinations that day since we didn't have any TVs at camp, but the next day I had a day off and was in The Varsity in Atlanta, eating chili dogs and the best onion rings ever, and watched Nixon resign from the presidency! After I got home from camp, I read about the Philadelphia 11 and read everything I could get my hands on about the women. I went to seminary in 1976.
ReplyDeleteI was still a Roman at that time. I remember how thrilled I was to read of such a great event taking place in nearby Philadelphia. It was this event, more than any other, that led me into TEC. I continue to be a very PROUD Episcopalian!
