A New Bishop for Rochester

Congratulations to the Diocese of Rochester on the 2nd ballot election of the Rev Dr. Prince Singh as the next Bishop of Rochester.

O God of unchangeable power and eternal light: Look favorably on your whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery; by the effectual working of your providence, carry out in tranquillity the plan of salvation; let the whole world see and know that things which were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and that all things are being brought to their perfection by him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

I'll do a bit of a hijack here - but it is about a new bishop. Specifically, Jeffery Dean Lee was just ordained the 11th Bishop of Chicago today, and I had a good time singing in the choir for it. It was a quite joyous occasion. I'd never been to an ordination before (deacon, priest or bishop). The Diocese rented out the House of Hope on the South Side of Chicago. They rented it so as to accomodate the anticipated crowd - while it's a Baptist Church, it struck me as more of a "worship arena". But it served as an excellent venue. Although as a singer I have to confess the place has the accoustics of a hockey rink, the sound system folks did a good job.

The homilist, who knows Bp. Lee well, noted that like anyone else Bp. Lee is not a perfect bishop. It took all my self control to keep from shouting out "We're not a perfect Diocese!" So good luck to Bp. Lee, and the Holy Spirit too. He'll need both. So will we.

Spooky! Must be something to do with the name "Rochester." Hopefully your Rochester will be more enlightened than ours.
