Bits & Pieces for a Saturday afternoon ...

ALOHA!

+Gene Robinson addresses a gathering of Integrity members and friend in Honolulu [reported in the Honolulu Star Bulletin]:

"Jesus said this remarkable thing in John's Gospel, at the last supper on the night before he died. He said, 'I have other things I would like to tell you but you're not able to hear them right now. So I'm going to send the Holy Spirit who will lead you in all things.'

"That's a very significant thing," said Robinson, "especially if you come out of the tradition, like I did, which believes that everything we needed to know was revealed by the time the canon of Scripture was closed. There it is in Scripture. God said it, I believe it, and that's that. God did all that 2,000 years ago, said 'OK, that's all you need to know, hope it goes well.'

"But what if, instead, we worship a living God who is still interacting with us, who is still in our midst when two or three gather together, and who is actively leading us into all things. That is a God I am much more interested in than a static God who did all that years ago," Robinson told the group.

"The more I read the Bible, the clearer it becomes to me that Jesus was in trouble all the time. He was in trouble with those good people, the Pharisees and Sadducees. He was always bucking the status quo. He was always bringing people in from the margins of society.

Susan, thanks for the pic of Bruno & Jerry's Celebration & Union at All Saints today.

So many great Christians, members, friends, families and people of color, Jew's and gays to celebrate what God has brought together (love).

What a beautiful wedding, celebration of the Holy Eucharist.

So many people that love, the church was just raidiant! A beautiful and wonderful day. Oh, the picture is on my screensaver with other pics that I love (mostly animals and flowers though).
Peace, Joe

These arguments one way or the other about the Bible have been a colossal waste of time. People just go back and forth until someone says, "Well, let's all agree to disagree." Then the real consequences of homosexual promiscuity are ignored, and this is one of the enormous tragedies of our time. What the Bible says should be obvious to anyone, but looking at consequences is the only practical way to arrive at a rational, compassionate conclusion.

Note from a visitor to All Saints from the East Coast -- "It was like MoveOn.org at prayer."

I am praying for you Susan. In my opinion you are heading down a steep hill into a lake of fire.

“What the Bible says should be obvious to anyone, . . .”

The meaning of the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States should be obvious to anyone, but is in fact one of the most debated sections of our constitution. Yet it was written less than 250 years ago, in English, and the original document still exists. Parts of it, however, such as the Third Amendment, are clearly seen as no longer relevant to the times we live in.

The Bible, more a library than a book, was written over a period of thousands of years, in a variety of languages (English not among them), involving centuries of oral tradition, hand copying and editing, and countless translations. The four Gospels were written decades after Jesus’ crucifixion. Yet many today still choose to ignore the historical and cultural context that shaped the Bible.

What is clear, in my view, is that Jesus, at his Last Supper, invited all of us to share in the bread and wine, in remembrance of him.

The distribution to the disciples of wallet-sized laminated lists of rules and exclusions was not part of the experience that evening.

I’m not sure why promiscuity is brought up in a thread about two people making a loving commitment to spend their lives together. I’m pretty sure that there have been documented cases of heterosexual promiscuity, even among fundamentalist pastors and conservative politicians.

Congratulations to Bruno and Jerry.

When TEC is reduced to a footnote of Christianity and the Prayer Book has been destroyed with official heresies, what will be the attraction of this polished tomb known as All Saints? So much for good faith promises by California's bishop Bruno to assure the Communion that no more public SSBs will occur.
Note the blinding stampede towards irrelevance such as in Bahai or Unitarianism.
