Dear Rev. Russell:

It was a great game, but for those of us in the East, the ending time after midnight makes it hard to get anything done the next day.
I'm rooting for the Lakers, but they'll have to play a lot better than they did last night when they get back to Boston.

Congratulations on last night's victory, which I predicted to my daughter yesterday. I figured they'd have one last bullet left on their home floor. It's going to be fun to see a Boston team win on their home venue for once.

BTW, I'm not just being contrary. To establish my bona fides, I was born about 20 miles SW of Boston Garden (Bahst'n Gahd'n). I was 4 when they won their first championship - by the time I graduated from HS they'd won 11 of 13, and that was Russell and K.C. Jones and Sam Jones and Jo Jo White and Havlicek, a team that started 5 Hall of Famers and had another one on the bench. I watch them do the promo of splitting Bird and Magic's faces - too bad that they don't go back further with Russell, etc.

I remember when "Beat L.A." started. It was a loss. The 76'ers were stopping the Celtics championship streak at 8 in 1967 by beating them in Boston in the conference finals. At the very end of the game, when the 76'ers had pulled ahead to an insurmountable lead, the fans stood up and exhorted the 76'ers to "Beat L.A." Doctor J. said it was the most amazing thing that ever happened to him in a game. Now THAT'S a rivalry. And the 76'ers proceeded to do just that, BTW.

The Lakers are a very good team, but they don't have the defense to take it all from this edition of the Celtics. The Celtics needed to win one in L.A. and they did. I think this ends Tuesday.
