Ten Years Ago Today ...

... God willed and the people consented to my ordination as a presbyter in the Church of God at St. John's Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Los Angeles ...

... by the Right Reverend Frederick Houk Borsch (still one of my favorite purple people on the planet!) And here I am ...

... (having a VERY flat hair day!) with both of my boys immediately following the ordination service outside St. John's. (And no, Jamie was not angry about anything ... he pretty much looked like that from the ages of 13-17 ... and still hates having his picture taken!)

Swamped as I am today by the business of being a presbyter in the Church of God I might have had this anniversary date pass by altogether unrecognized if not for a note from one of my fellow ordinands reminding me that today was INDEED the day -- and reminding me to rejoice and be glad in it!
.
So, rejoice and be glad with me ... and let us continue to pray, as was prayed for us that day at St. John's:

May the Lord who has given us the will to do these things give us the grace and power to perform them. Amen.

Susan, congratulations on your ordination anniversary. And thanks for posting the photograph. It brings back happy memories of the three years I worshipped at St. John's while a faculty member at USC (1965-1968). What a beautiful church! And now, it's the cathedral? A great choice.

One of the things I remember vividly was a common occurance at the Sunday Eucharist. Hispanics would come into the nave after mass at St. Joseph's across the street, kneel in the aisle or in the pews, and adore the figure (and the person) of Christ in the large aureole above the high altar. I loved it!

Wow. I'm remembering having a late night burger (or equally unhealthy but delicious snack - maybe a Reuben?) in the hotel sports bar in Philadelphia in the midst of a very hot (and humid!) 1997 during General Convention. Randy and I were in a booth and you and Liz Habecker and I-don't-remember-who-else (mabye-Joanna-Satoris?) were in a booth near us and Randy and I were asking each other "who is that woman in the short grey hair?" Later I learned you thought we were "scary." LOL! I can't believe you were still enjoying your gift of an extended Diaconate at that point, was it? Do I have this right?

I'm so honored to have been a part of your ministry over the last few years. (Hmmm, I'm wondering now about the "few" part of that - I think maybe it's been a while. Time flies when you're bringin in the sheaves and destroying western civilization!).

In any event, congratulations!

Love you,
Jim

Many blessings on this day and on your continued ministry in days ahead. Thank you for the photo of St John's. I remember when Integrity LA worshipped there many years ago and I have very fond memories of that sacred space.

Hey, Suze. Sorry I missed your happy day. May the next ten years be filled with joy and far less stressful than the last five years.

Belatedly, many many blessings on the tenth anniversary of your ordination to the priesthood. We are all the richer for it... and what a 'long, strange trip it has been,' right? (from one whose 14th anniversary is the end of this month)
