In Memoriam
Matthew Wayne Shepard . December 1, 1976 - October 12, 1998 .
Matthew and I were the same age and both came from rural states. In fact we have the same first name. His death deeply hurt me at the time. I had not come out of the closet and his murder kept me ther a bit longer. Yet, I still felt guilt for not being as open and honest as he was. In a strange way, his memory has inspired me to work harder for justice and peace. Now I rejoice that I am able to live with such Integrity. I still grieve for a man I never met. Such, I guess, is the power of martyrs. Blessed Matthew of Wyoming, pray for us.
